Sony XBR55X900C 55" 4K Ultra HD 3D Smart LED TV (2015 Model)
In a stark contrast to last year’s wedge-shaped XBR-X900B, the XBR-X900C is Sony’s slimmest LED TV so far, with parts of the cabinet measuring just 0.2 inches thick. While the bottom portion of the TV is thicker in order to hold the inputs and internals and an extra thin bezel that makes the TV appear like it is all picture, the X900C is undoubtedly a stunning set.
Unfortunately, beyond external design the X900C seems to be somewhat of a step down from the excellent X900B. This 120Hz edge-lit LED TV is one of Sony’s best TVs this year, but lacks the local dimming that its predecessor had. Despite the inclusion of 4K, Sony’s excellent wide color gamut technology, and the latest processing from Sony, black levels and uniformity are not at the level of the previous X900B. This TV does not perform as well in a dark room, and side angle viewing isn’t strong (although this is the case with all LED TVs). However, Sony’s X-Reality PRO upscaling engine is excellent.
For this year, Sony has overhauled their Smart TV and Apps interface, bringing in Android to create one for them. This has been an improvement over past interfaces, with plenty of content options, snappy response, and good overall ease of use. Connectivity includes four HDMI 2.0 ports, a single MHL port, three USB 2.0, component and composite video, digital audio out, and an Ethernet jack.
Despite not quite matching up in terms of performance to the previous X900B, Sony’s X900C is a stunningly designed and very good overall TV. If you’re looking for some of the best that Sony currently has to offer, this is the TV to buy.
